Giovanni Vetere (born December 3, 1940 in Strongoli , Calabria ) is an Italian painter and sculptor . With his pictures, sculptures and frescoes, after more than 40 years of creative work and a large number of exhibitions in Europe and the USA, as well as successes at Art Basel and Art Cologne, he is one of the renowned European artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Life

Vetere grew up without regular schooling in modest, rural conditions, which were marked by austerity, church and tradition. In 1957 he went to Turin and 1961 to Germany, where he initially made a living as a factory worker in Bonn . A serious car accident in 1965 tied him to the bedside for months. Vetere used the time for further training and improved his German language. In 1968 he married and moved with his wife Brigitta to Troisdorf , where he worked in a chemical factory.

The birth of his daughter Carmen Clea in 1971 triggered a significant inner change that led Vetere to embark on a career as an artist the following year with the support of his wife. In 1973 his first exhibition took place in Troisdorf. In 1975 he founded his own gallery in which he also gave other artists the opportunity to present their works. When it was closed in 1989, he and his family moved to Eitorf , where he lives today, and there acquired the "Villa Keysers", which also includes an old cigar factory with a 1.5 hectare site, which is now a sculpture park . In addition to Veteres Atelier, the old factory building houses the Incontro Gallery , which his daughter founded in 1991 and is still running today.

A central theme of his work are simple human figures with rounded heads that are reminiscent of children's drawings. The recurring features are the expressive "button eyes" and a small, round mouth, arranged like the corner points of an isosceles triangle standing on top . With this simplified and reduced style he formulates his maxim "the childlike as the cradle of our culture".
