Giovanni von Castelmur came from an old Bergell family. His father Antonio (1771–1834) had settled as a confectioner in Marseille , where he ran a pastry shop, while his mother Maria (1771–1801) came from Stampa. After finishing school in Marseille, he studied politics and law and ran the pastry shop in Nice. As a wealthy man, Castelmur returned to Bergell, where he married his cousin Anna Castelmur (1813-1892) from Vicosoprano in 1840, the daughter of Podestà von Stampa. The marriage remained childless.

In 1830 he published political considerations (“Alcune riflessioni politiche”), later he translated Heinrich Zschokke's “History of the Free State of the Three Leagues ” into Italian. In 1839 he acquired the hill with the Castelmur castle and the Nossa Donna church , which he extensively restored and expanded. In 1840 he had the patrician house of the Redolfi family built in Coltura near Stampa, built in 1723, converted into Palazzo Castelmur. In 1844 he was elected Podestà des Tales. With his fortune he promoted the schools in the valley, helped finance the first telegraph station, had roads repaired and financed the printing of a new church hymn book.

In recognition of his publications, he was made baron around 1860. According to other sources, the origin of his title is unclear. After his death in Nice he was buried in the Nossa Donna church in Castelmur. His legacy went to Bortol Lodovico Antoni de Castelmur, the son of his cousin and brother of his wife Bartolomeo Castelmur (1809–1843).

His wife Anna survived him by 20 years. She continued her husband's work. Through a legacy, she enabled Bergell teachers to improve their Italian. In 1873 she established the Castelmur Foundation with the aim of maintaining and maintaining the area. In 1890 she made the construction of a hospital possible through generous donations. After her death, the construction of a bridge from Stampa to Coltura, the "Ponte della Baronessa", was financed with her funds
