The summit in Moscow was the fourth summit between US President Ronald Reagan and the general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), Mikhail Gorbachev . It took place in Moscow between May 29, 1988 and June 3, 1988 .

The highlight of the conference was the exchange of the instruments of ratification of the INF (Intermediate Nuclear Forces) treaty on June 1 in the Kremlin . The contract came into force on the same day. He obliged the contracting parties to completely dismantle all medium-range nuclear missiles. On May 27, 1988, the US Senate had already ratified the treaty.

Reagan and Gorbachev continued to discuss bilateral issues such as the problems in Central America , southern Africa , the Middle East and the impending withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan . In addition, the two leaders continued their discussions on human rights during previous summit conferences.

At the summit, seven agreements were signed on less important issues such as student exchanges and fishing rights.
