biography

He was born in Fermo around 1544, the names of his parents are unknown.

After he had obtained his degree in in utroque iure (ecclesiastical and civil law), he began his ecclesiastical career around 1570 as a trainee lawyer in the Apostolic Signature . After he held important administrative positions from 1571 to 1572 as governor of Ravenna and 1574 as governor of Faenza , he was Abbreviator de parco maiori in the papal chancellery in 1578 .

On June 1, 1579 he was transferred to the Archbishop of Ragusa and on August 8, 1583 to the diocese of Sarno . In December 1587 Matteucci became apostolic nuncio of Venice . In October 1589, after the death of the French King Henry III. differences of opinion arose between the Holy See and the Serenissima, in which Matteucci showed little diplomatic skill. After his return to Rome he was appointed governor of Rome. He held this office until April 1591, when the new Pope Gregory XIV elected him general commissioner of the papal army and sent him to France to support the Catholic League in the civil war. The successor popes soon showed their intention to limit military engagement in France. After Matteucci was replaced by Innocenzo Malvasia, he returned to Rome.

On December 5, 1594 he was appointed Bishop of Viterbo and Tuscania and held this office until his death.
