Gisbert Gillhausen (born July 28, 1856 in Sterkrade , † March 16, 1917 in Essen - Rüttenscheid ; full name: Karl Heinrich Gisbert Gillhausen ) was a German civil engineer , industrial manager and politician .

Life

The son of a Protestant hut clerk from Gutehoffnungshütte attended high school in Wesel and then studied at the Royal Rheinisch-Westfälische Polytechnische Schule in Aachen . At the age of 19, like his father, he became an employee of the Gutehoffnungshütte. With his assistance as a civil engineer, the Horchheimer railway bridge over the Rhine near Koblenz and numerous bridges in the course of the Gotthard Railway in Switzerland were built.

In June 1890 he switched to the Fried company as head of department . Croup in Essen. There he was promoted to assistant to the board of directors, became an authorized signatory in 1897 , a member of the board of directors in 1899 and served as a member of the board from 1903 (conversion to a stock corporation ) until 1913 . Even after 1913 he carried out management tasks in the area of ​​the Rhenish-Westphalian industry, for example as a member of the supervisory board of the Bochum Association .

Under his direction, the various Krupp factories in Essen were modernized, the Krupp ironworks in Rheinhausen (the so-called "Friedrich-Alfred-Hütte") built and the Germania shipyard in Kiel expanded.

In addition, Gillhausen was involved in the development of the ship's diesel engine , which emerged from a cooperation between Krupp and MAN . He put it through at the Germania shipyard for propelling ships.

From 1907 until his death, Gillhausen was a city ​​councilor for the city of Essen. In the same year he became a member of the old gentlemen's association of Montania, academic association of chemists, miners and smelters , which later became Corps Montania Aachen.

The stately home that Gillhausen had built in 1913/1914 by the Essen architect Oskar Schwer at Alfredstrasse 66 in Essen-Rüttenscheid has been preserved with few changes in contrast to most of the industrial facilities planned by Gillhausen.

Honors & awards

Gillhausen received the honorary title of "Secret Building Councilor" and an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing. E. h.). He was also the bearer of the Prussian Red Eagle Order IV class, the Prussian Crown Order III. Class and the Chinese Order of the Double Dragon Third Degree, III. Class. According to him, which was Gillhausenstraße in Essen- Bredeney as well as in Duisburg and Duisburg-Rheinhausen named.
