Gisel ( Russian Гизель , Ossetian Джызӕл ) is a village (selo) in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania in Russia with 7814 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about ten kilometers west of the republic capital Vladikavkaz . It belongs to the Prigorodny district .

history

During the Second World War , Gisel was occupied by German troops from Army Group A and the 1st Panzer Army in December 1942 , which, however, had to end their advance towards Vladikavkaz and Grozny due to the strong resistance of the Soviet troops. Gisel or Wladikawkas (Ordzhonikidze at that time) can therefore be regarded as the most southeastern point to which the Wehrmacht advanced on Soviet territory during the Second World War.

Since South Ossetia's war of independence against Georgia in 1992, Gisel has been the location of a large refugee camp run by the UNHCR .

The place was hit by the effects of a large mudslide that fell from the northern slopes of the Caucasus in 2002. They claimed at least 150 people dead.
