Gisela Karau
Gisela Karau (born Wilczynski ; born March 28, 1932 in Berlin ; † April 9, 2010 ibid) was a German writer who became known in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in particular through a series of children's books on topics from recent history.
Life
Gisela Karau was born in Berlin in 1932 and, after graduating from high school in 1950, completed a five-year training course as an editor at the Berliner Zeitung BZ am Abend , for which she also worked as a freelance reporter and columnist until 1990 . She began writing children's books in the 1960s. Her first work, which achieved greater awareness and was reprinted by various publishers after 1990, was the book Der gute Stern des Janusz K. (1972) about the fate of Polish children in the Buchenwald concentration camp . Other popular children's books by her in the GDR were, for example, May I say Wilhelm to you? (1979) on the life of Wilhelm Pieck and Loni (1982) on a girl in Berlin in the years after the Second World War . In addition, she wrote screenplays for a number of children's films of DEFA , so on the basis of her book The good star of Janusz K. the screenplay for the film flies My blue bird .
Her books for adults published in the GDR included, for example, the novels Berliner Liebe (1984) and Familienkrach (1988). In 1986 she received the Goethe Prize of the City of Berlin . After the reunification of Germany , she published several novels that deal with the fate of people in the GDR, during the period of transition and in East Germany in the period after 1990. In addition, she wrote other children's books , including Bolle, the friendly dog (1994), Kisses on Ice (1997) and That Comes in the Best Family Before (2003).
Gisela Karau was married to the writer Günter Karau and was the mother of two children. After her first husband died in 1986, she married Hans-Jürgen Dörry, 18 years her junior, in 1988. She died in a Berlin clinic in 2010.
