Gislebert from Mons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gislebert von Mons (* around 1150 probably in Hainaut ; † September 1, 1224 ) was a Hennegau chronicler .

Life

Gislebert probably grew up at the Grafenhof von Hennegau. He rose to the position of chaplain, chancellor and keeper of the seal of Count Baldwin V of Hainaut. As a confidante of the count, Gislebert was entrusted with several political missions and took part in the court day in Mainz in 1184 . Due to his quick action in 1191, Count Balduin also rose to become Count of Flanders . 1193 Gislebert left the service of Baldwin. For his work Gislebert was endowed with numerous benefices and was among other things provost of Mons .

Gislebert is the author of the Chronicon Hanoniense, important for the history of the empire (first edition by Du Chasteler, Brussels 1784). The chronicle describes the period from 1086 to 1195. Especially for the period from 1168 to 1195, it provides very detailed information about the history of the Hainaut and the empire , some of which are based on one's own views and actions . The work is generally considered reliable and was also used by later chroniclers. His presentation of the election of Friedrich Barbarossa in 1152, which differs greatly from other, more Staufer-friendly sources, is remarkable .
