Gitta German

Gitta Deutsch (born February 20, 1924 in Vienna ; died March 25, 1998 there ) was an Austro-British writer and literary translator.

Life

Gitta Deutsch was a daughter of the musicologist Otto Erich Deutsch . After Austria was annexed in 1938, she came to Great Britain on a children 's transport run by the Quaker Children's Committee . Her mother Hanna had died in 1937, her brother Peter survived the persecution of the Jews in Austria. Her father managed to escape and Gitta now lived with him in Cambridge . When war broke out, they were interned on the Isle of Man for a time . She was involved in Cambridge in the youth group of the Free Austrian Movement .

Deutsch occasionally did secretarial work for Ludwig Wittgenstein . Deutsch married and stayed in England after the war, while her father returned to Vienna. She returned to Vienna in 1969 and worked there for fifteen years as a clerk for the UN . She translated works by Erich Fried , Gerhard Fritsch , Christine Nöstlinger , Ernst Schönwiese and others. She edited the works of her father and her current partner, the natural scientist Engelbert Broda .

In 1985 she received the Wystan Hugh Auden Translator Prize for her translations.
