Giulio Cesare Arresti (born February 26, 1619 in Bologna ; † July 17, 1701 there ) was an Italian organist and composer .

Live and act

Arresti was connected to his hometown as an organist and conductor all his life. From 1649 to 1699 he was organist at the Basilica of San Petronio , as well as Kapellmeister of the churches of S. Salvatore and S. Domenico. He was a co-founder of the " Accademia Filarmonica " and in 1701 was its chairman. During this time there was a bitter ten-year argument with Maurizio Cazzati , whom he accused of musical errors.

In addition to sonatas for violin and cello and works for organ, he wrote a number of sacred works, including masses, psalms and oratorios ("The Garden of Gethsemane", "The Farewell of Jesus to Mary", "The Wedding of Rebekah" and "The Beheading of St. John ").

His son Floriano Arresti (1667-1717) was a student of Bernardo Pasquini in Rome, where he worked until 1703. He created works for organ as well as cantatas, oratorios and operas.
