Giuseppe Andrea Bizzarri (born May 11, 1802 in Paliano , † August 26, 1877 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal to the Curia .

Life

Bizzarri came from a wealthy family and was the son of the Gonfaloniere Gregorio Bizzarri. He studied philosophy and theology in Palestrina and Rome. He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1824 . In 1829 he became archivist at the Apostolic Penitentiary , where in 1832 he also assumed the office of scriptor. In 1837 Bizzarri became Undersecretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulations, of which he became Assessor in 1851. In the same year Pope Pius IX awarded him . the title of Apostolic Protonotary . In 1853 he appointed Bizzarri consultor to the Holy Office .

On November 30, 1854, Pius IX appointed him. the Titular Archbishop of Philippi . He was ordained bishop on December 17th of the same year by Cardinal Gabriele della Genga Sermattei ; Co- consecrators were Eugène Charles de Mazenod , Bishop of Marseille , and Mariano Falcinelli Antoniacci , Bishop of Forlì . On January 9, 1855, Bizzarri became papal assistant to the throne .

In the consistory of March 16, 1863 Pius IX took him. as cardinal priest of San Girolamo dei Croati into the college of cardinals . On January 17, 1867, Cardinal Bizzarri became Prefect of the Congregation for Relics . During this time he was also involved in the preparations for the First Vatican Council , where he headed the Commission for Religious Affairs. From 1869 to 1870 he finally attended the council at which papal infallibility was raised to dogma. On August 31, 1872, he finally became prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulations . From 1874 to 1875 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . On July 5, 1875, he opted for the titular church of Santa Balbina .

Cardinal Bizzarri died in Rome in August 1877, where he was buried in a public cemetery.
