Giuseppe Galletti (born August 11, 1798 in Bologna , † July 26, 1873 there ) was an Italian patriot and politician who temporarily headed the papal police. From November 18, 1865 to February 13, 1867, the former freedom fighter sat in the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Italy .

Life

After studying law, Pietro and Anna Benassi's son practiced successfully as a lawyer in Bologna. In 1825 he married Carlotta Mandini. The marriage has five children. In the early days of the Risorgimento , Galletti took part in the Carbonari uprisings in his homeland, Emilia . When the city of Bologna in 1831 against papal restoration rebels victorious - the Austrians have left their garrison - is Galletti parliamentarians in the short-lived United Provinces of Italy on the territory of the Papal States . In the following thirteen years the revolutionary fought against Gregor XVI's pro- Austrian policy . , especially against its judicial reform. Gregory XVI dies on June 1, 1846. The general amnesty of Pius IX. of July 17, 1846 brings the incarcerated to freedom. On March 10, 1848, the new Pope took over Galletti as Minister of Police in the government of the Papal States. Galletti remained in office until December 26, 1848.

On February 9, 1849, Giuseppe Mazzini proclaimed the Roman Republic . Galletti had been elected President of the Constituent Assembly two days earlier . On July 21 of the same year, the president had to flee to Sardinia before General Oudinot was on his way . In June 1849 Galetti had defended Rome personally in Velletri and at the Milvian Bridge from the powerful attacking French expeditionary force . Leo IX, persevering in exile in Gaeta , had the troops of Napoleon III. called into the country.

In November 1862, Galletti returned home to Bologna. On July 26, 1873, he died of a stroke in his hometown .
