Giuseppe Govone

Giuseppe Govone (born November 19, 1825 in Isola d'Asti , Piedmont , † January 25, 1872 in Alba , Piedmont) was an Italian major general .

Life

Govone attended the military academy in Turin and joined the Sardinian army in 1845 as a sub-lieutenant . In 1848 he took part in the war against Austria and also took part in the campaign in Schleswig-Holstein in 1849 . There he was at the headquarters of Field Marshal von Wrangel .

During the War of the Orient in 1854 and 1855, Govone was first in Omar Pasha's headquarters and later in that of Marshal Saint-Arnaud .

When La Marmora led a Sardinian auxiliary corps to the Crimea in 1855 , Govone was assigned to it as the second chief of staff and remained at his side during the Sardinian War of 1859. He then took over in military command in the newly acquired provinces.

In 1863 Govone was promoted to general and as such went to Berlin for negotiations in 1866 , where he concluded the Prussian-Italian alliance against Austria on April 8th . La Marmora published his reports at the time in Un po più di luce (Florence 1873).

In the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866, Govone took command of the 9th Division , which he led with distinction in the Battle of Custozza . After the peace agreement, Govone was appointed head of the General Staff and in 1867 joined the Chamber of Deputies .

In December 1869, Govone was appointed Minister of War and achieved significant savings in war administration, which, however, had a negative impact on the effectiveness of the Italian army. In 1870 he resigned.

Giuseppe Govone died on January 25, 1872 in Alba in Piedmont.
