Giuseppe Saracco (born October 8, 1821 in Bistagno ; † January 19, 1907 there ) was the Italian President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister) from June 24, 1900 to February 15, 1901 .

Political career

After working as a lawyer, he was elected to the Piedmontese parliament in 1849 , to which he was a member until 1865. He was a follower of Camillo Benso Count von Cavour and after his death joined the party of Urbano Rattazzi .

In 1862 he became chief executive officer for public works in Rattazzi's cabinet. In 1864 the Minister Quintino Sella appointed him Secretary General for Finance and in 1865 he became a Senator . Saracco gained great fame as a financial professional. In 1879 he achieved a temporary postponement of the abolition of the taxation of grain and vigorously opposed the financial actions of Maglianis, which he considered too liberal.

Giuseppe Saracco was appointed Minister for Public Works in the cabinets of Depretis and Francesco Crispi in 1887 and 1893 , but could not prevent the negative effects of some controversial assignments at Depretis.

In November 1898 Saracco was elected President of the Senate. In the same year King Umberto I awarded him the highest title, the Collare dell'Annunziata .

Government formed by Saracco

In June 1900 Giuseppe Saracco succeeded in forming a reconciliation government after an official crisis that had caused the downfall of Luigi Pelloux's cabinet . However, his tenure as Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior was overshadowed by the assassination of King Umberto on July 29, 1900. Eventually his government failed because of too weak an attitude towards the strike by the port officials near Genoa .

Activities after his resignation

After his resignation as Prime Minister Saracco resumed the office of Senate President, but was not reaffirmed in his office after the establishment of the cabinet by Giolitti .

Giuseppe Saracco was awarded the title of Cavaliere dell'Ordine dell'Annunziata .
