Giuseppe Wulz (born March 18, 1843 , Cave del Predil ; † March 14, 1918 in Trieste ) was a Trieste photographer who worked in the fields of portrait and landscape as well as ship photography.

Professional background

Apprenticeship with Wilhelm Friedrich Engel

Wulz, who came to Trieste with his widowed mother in 1851, began an apprenticeship in 1860 with Wilhelm Friedrich Engel (1824-1891), who came from Fulda . He had established himself as the first professional photographer in the city in 1857 and also headed the photo studio belonging to the 3rd section of the Austrian Lloyd in the Palazzo del Tergesteo (Tergesteum), the original seat of the Lloyd.

After Engel left Trieste in 1868, Wulz and Luigi Boccalini, also an apprentice of Engels', took over his studio on the Pizza della Borsa, which was continued under the name "Allievi di Engel" and mainly took portraits. As a portrait and press photographer, he photographed Arturo Toscanini , Hans Richter , Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms on the occasion of their visits and appearances in Trieste.

In addition to portrait photography, Wulz also devoted himself intensively to landscape photography, and he documented the rapid development of Trieste in the second half of the 19th century with several cityscapes. In his work he experimented with new printing techniques; he switched from collodion to albumin and from 1880 to gelatin . Between 1885 and 1890, Wulz carried out a larger order for Österreichischer Lloyd , in which he took 72 close-up photos of the ship's fleet in the bay in front of Muggia on photo plates .

Stabilmento fotografico Wulz

After separating from Boccalini in 1891, the "Stabilmento fotografico Wulz" moved to the Palazzo Hierschl in Via del Corso 19. In 1912, his studio burned down completely, which led to severe psychological stress for Wulz and he transferred his company to his soon afterwards Son Carlo (1874–1928). His daughters Marion († 1993) and Wanda , who was close to Futurism , continued the studio until 1981 and finally handed over the photographic work of Giuseppe Wulz to the "Museo di storia della fotografia Fratelli Alinari " in Florence, founded in 1985 .

Artist friends

Wulz was friends with the painter Giuseppe Barison , but also associated with other representatives of the Trieste cultural scene, such as Giuseppe Garzolini (1850-1938), Alfredo Tominz (1883-1926), Pietro Fragiacomo and Umberto Veruda.

tomb

On the "Cimitero comunale Sant'Anna" in Via dell'Istria 206 is the common burial place of all four photographers from the Wulz family, adorned with an obelisk.
