Giwi Javachishvili
Giwi Dschawachischwili (Georgian გივი ჯავახიშვილი; * December 18, 1912 in Tbilisi , Russian Empire , today Georgia ; † November 10, 1985 ibid) was a Georgian politician and from 1953 to 1975 Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Georgian SSR .
Life
Giwi Javachishvili was born as the son of the doctor Dmitri Dschawachishvili and Ana Magalashvili. In 1934 he graduated from the South Caucasian Industrial Institute as a qualified engineer geologist. From 1934 to 1952 he worked in various local and party organizations. In 1952 he was appointed Vice Mayor, and in the same year he was appointed Lord Mayor of Tbilisi. From April to September 1953 he was deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Georgian SSR and then until December 18, 1975 its chairman.
During his tenure, he headed the Commission for the Protection of the Georgian Language. In 1968 he was the chairman of the commission for the 800th birthday of the poet Shota Rustaveli . He was a member of the Georgian SSR and USSR High Council several times. Javakhishvili headed the Georgian delegation at an Expo twice: in Brussels in 1958 and in Montreal in 1968 .
In 1961, Javakhishvili gave a speech at the CPSU meeting in Moscow, in which he, on behalf of the Georgian delegation , demanded that the remains of Stalin be removed from his mausoleum.
On the initiative and with the support of Javakhishvili, a philharmonic hall and a sports palace were built in Tbilisi. In 1966 he opened the first metro station in Tbilisi.
During his tenure as chairman, the longest in the history of Georgia, Javakhishvili received visits from Jawaharlal Nehru , Margrethe II , Georges Pompidou , Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Fidel Castro .
