The Shining Slim Ladybug ( Coccidula rufa ) is a beetle from the family of ladybugs (Coccinellidae). These small, single-colored ladybugs live in wetlands across Europe. They are also called red reed ladybugs .
description
The shiny slender ladybirds are 2.5 to three millimeters long and have an elongated body with parallel side edges. This is red-brown in color, with the pronotum clearly darker in color. There are rarely specimens with a dark spot behind the scutellum or in the back of the wing . The underside of the animals are partly black. Their compound eyes are large, the antennae are long and have somewhat thickened end links.
Due to their elongated shape and single-colored wing covers, the beetles are not immediately recognizable as a typical ladybug species. The monochrome wing-coverts distinguish them from the closely related species of the spotted reed ladybug ( Coccidula scutellata ), which has a similar body shape but is characterized by dark dots or spots. The basic color of the spotted reed ladybug is lighter red than that of the glossy slender ladybug.
Occurrence and way of life
The beetles occur all over Europe except in the far north and are also native to Asia ( Turkey ) up to an altitude of about 1000 meters. They live in wet areas on marsh and aquatic plants .
They eat aphids that they hunt on the aquatic plants, namely Hyalopterus pruni , a species from the tube aphid family that not only lives on Prunus species such as blackthorn , but also on reeds ( Phragmites australis ), stilt reeds ( Arundo donax ) and the blue pipe grass ( Molinia caerulea ).
The wintering takes place in the reeds.
