Glafkos Klerides ( Greek Γλαύκος Ιοάννου Κληρίδης Gláfkos Ioánnou Klirídis , also Glafcos Clerides ; born April 24, 1919 in Nicosia ; † November 15, 2013 ibid) was a Greek-Cypriot politician and fourth president of the Republic of Cyprus from 1993 to 2003 .

Life

Klerides was born in Nicosia in 1919 , where he also died in 2013. He was the eldest son of the lawyer and statesman Ioannis Klerides.

In 1960 he became the first Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. In 1974 he became head of state for the first time during the Turkish military offensive. In 1976 he founded the Overall Democratic Movement (DISY), the ruling party in the Republic of Cyprus. In 1988 he ran as a presidential candidate against Georges Vassiliou . However, he narrowly lost the election in the second ballot, in which he received 48% of the vote. In 1993 he won the election to the office of President for a term of five years. In 1998 he was re-elected. He remained President of the Republic of Cyprus until the end of his second term in 2003. He was also the negotiator of the Republic of Cyprus with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .

He had a daughter, Katherine, who is a member of the House of Representatives. He suffered from colon cancer and kidney problems and died on November 15, 2013 in a hospital in Nicosia.

Second World War

During the Second World War he served as a gunner in the Royal Air Force. In 1942 his plane was shot down by Germans and he was captured. He remained in captivity until the end of the war.
