The Glas 1004 was a lower middle class passenger car from Hans Glas GmbH in Dingolfing , which was followed by the Glas 1204 and Glas 1304 models . Due to the first-time use of a series engine with a toothed belt drive as well as due to the independent design, the vehicles occupied a special position in the automobile industry of that time .

prototype

In 1960, an engine with an unusual camshaft drive was created in the glass test workshop. Former BMW designer Leonhard Ischinger designed an inline four-cylinder with an overhead camshaft that was driven by a timing belt that was new at the time . The 1.0 liter engine developed 31 kW (42 hp) at a speed of 4800 rpm. In the following year, a coupé body was built on the floor assembly of the Glas Isar, which was 10 cm longer . The new car was presented as Glas S 1004 at the IAA in September 1961 .

S 1004

The first production cars were delivered in August 1962. The water-cooled 992 cm³ engine (bore and stroke 72 × 61 mm) had been throttled to 31 kW (42 hp) at 4800 rpm to increase its reliability. The maximum torque was 7 mkp (69 Nm) at 2500 rpm. A fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox was locked to the engine, from which a cardan shaft transmitted the power to the rear axle.

The S 1004 had a self-supporting all-steel body with a floor pan reinforced by box-shaped longitudinal members. The wheels (tire size 5.20-13) were suspended at the front on lower transverse and upper trailing arms with coil springs and additional "rubber-air hollow springs", at the rear on a rigid axle with longitudinal three-leaf springs and also additional "rubber-air hollow springs". The hydraulically operated brake worked on drums on all four wheels (brake drum diameter 230 mm, braking area 488 cm²), the handbrake worked mechanically on the rear wheels via a cable. The steering worked with a worm and roller and tie rods of unequal length.

The coupé with the “convincingly simple lines” according to the advertising initially cost DM 5,595.00. A convertible priced at DM 6,200.00 was available from January 1963. In the summer of 1963 the price rose to DM 5,865.00 for the Coupé and DM 6,500.00 for the Cabriolet. A surcharge of DM 195.00 had to be paid for the disc brakes that are now available.

The press praised the 2 + 2-seater coupé, the first production car in the world with a timing belt-driven camshaft, but criticized the low deceleration of the standard drum brakes and the tendency to pitch vibrations when accelerating and braking because of the short wheelbase. Contemporary testers pointed out the “wrong” switching scheme and a stiff clutch, as with the Glas Isar, as annoying .

It soon became apparent that the middle-class clientele expected a car with four full-size seats. So the coupé was expanded into a two-door sedan. In order not to let the performance drop despite the higher weight, the engine was enlarged to 1189 cm³ by a crankshaft with a modified stroke (73 mm). In January 1963, Glas presented the new sedan with 39 kW (53 hp) and immediately followed suit with the coupé and cabriolet with the larger engine.

1004 TS / 1204 TS

From November 1963, more powerful versions of the two engines were offered. The 1.0 liter engine now had 992 cm³ and developed 63 hp (46 kW); the 1.2-liter engine 51 kW (70 hp) at 5750 rpm; maximum torque: 9.5 mkp (93 Nm) at 4200 rpm. This enabled the vehicles to reach a top speed of 160 km / h, a value that brought them close to Porsche and Alfa Romeo sports cars. The 1204 TS accelerated from standstill to 100 km / h in 11.9 seconds. The consumption determined in the test was 10.9 liters / 100 km. The front disc brakes were now standard, they were said to have “good deceleration values with low pedal force”. With the 1204 TS, Glas offered a sporty and well-equipped car for 6,980.00 DM (May 1964) that was otherwise only available in the price range of 10,000 DM and higher.

In 1964 the Glas 1204 TS achieved success in motorsport. Among other things, with Gerhard Bodmer at the wheel, he finished eighth in the overall classification of the 86 cars that started in the 500 km race on the Nürburgring and won the touring car class up to 1300 cm³ with an average of 112.2 km / h. Bodmer / Schmidt were just as successful in the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps; Here, too, they achieved eighth place in the overall ranking (average 143.791 km / h) and finished the competition as class winners ahead of Lambrechts / Mombaerts (also Glas 1204 TS), who were twelfth in the overall ranking.

1304 TS

In March 1965, the 1290 cc engine with 55 kW (75 hp) was taken over from the Glas GT in the sedan. In September, the engine output was increased to 62.5 kW (85 PS). This was the top model of the series with a top speed of 168 km / h.

1304 / S 1304

In September of the same year, a throttled version of the 1.3-liter engine with only 44 kW (60 hp) appeared. In addition to the 1304 sedan, the S 1304 was also available as a coupé and a convertible.

1004

Also from September 1965, a sedan with the 992 cc engine of the 1004 TS model, which was throttled to 29 kW (40 hp), was offered as an entry-level model.

1004 CL / 1304 CL

In August 1966, two hatchbacks with hatchbacks and a large hatchback that were derived from the sedans appeared. This body shape was not yet widespread - at least on the German market - but it did not help the series achieve the desired success. Because of the short wheelbase, there wasn't much space in the interior, especially in the rear seats. The vehicles were equipped with the 1004 (29 kW) or 1304 (44 kW) engines.

While the other variants were discontinued in December 1967 at the latest, the CL models were produced until April 1968, most recently under the direction of BMW . A total of 38,507 vehicles of the 1004/1204/1304 series were produced in five and a half years.
