GlassBridge Enterprises (until 2017: Imation Corp. ) is an American manufacturer and supplier of storage media based in Oakdale , Minnesota . The European branch is located in Hoofddorp near Amsterdam ( Netherlands ). The company's German headquarters are in Neuss .
history
The beginning of the 1950s was 3M Data Storage created to magnetic tapes for IBM - Tape Drives produce. In 1996, 3M's Imaging & Information division separated to become Imation. The film division was sold to Kodak . Imation today holds over 250 US patents on data storage.
Over time, Imation has not only expanded its brand portfolio with the distribution rights for storage media from the brands IBM , Sun , Storagetek , Exabyte and HP (optical media), but also through the acquisition of other brands and companies.
In January 2006 Imation took over the competitor Memorex from Hanny Holdings ( Hong Kong ) for about 330 million US dollars , in May 2007 the competitor TDK Recording Media and thus became the world's largest supplier of optical storage media. In June 2008 XtremeMac adopted 31 December 2012 Nexsan .
In addition to the core products, the product portfolio includes data cartridges such as LTO, 9x40, T10000, RDX or 3592, as well as optical media such as CD , DVD , Blu-ray , Lightscribe as well as floppy disks and USB sticks . Imation also expanded its hardware portfolio with external hard drive solutions and solid state drives .
2014 sales amounted to 729.5 million US dollars and the loss at 114.7 million US dollars.
On February 21, 2017, the company was renamed from Imation to GlassBridge Enterprises after it had sold all storage activities and is now realigning itself as a financial investor.
