Faith and Power - Saxony in Europe during the Reformation was the 2nd Saxon State Exhibition . It took place from May 24th to October 10th 2004 in Torgau and was attended by over 200,000 people.

theme

The theme of the exhibition was the Reformation period , during which the Electorate of Saxony played a central role in Europe. Protected by the Saxon electors who tried to assert themselves against Emperor Charles V , Martin Luther was able to propagate his church reform, which ultimately led to the division of the church and recognition of the evangelical creed. In addition to the political and religious-historical developments, the architecture, music and painting of this time, including works of art by Lucas Cranach and Albrecht Dürer , were in the focus of the exhibition, as well as technical achievements such as early products from the printing industry .

Place of issue

The exhibition was spread over three buildings, all of which are historically related to the theme of the state exhibition: Hartenfels Castle , the Torgau Castle Chapel , which was inaugurated personally by Martin Luther as the first new Protestant church in 1544, and the Electoral Chancellery , in which the administrative headquarters of Saxony was located during the Reformation. The late Gothic Albrechtsbau, the oldest part of Hartenfels Castle, was renovated and modernized especially for the occasion.

Organization and scientific support

The state exhibition was conceived and realized by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and was under the patronage of the then Saxon Prime Minister Georg Milbradt .

The scientific advisory board consisted of:
