Hans John (musicologist)

Hans Karl Ferdinand John (born September 7, 1936 in Bad Freienwalde ) is a qualified German musicologist and former university professor. His father was a cantor and organist and made it possible for him to attend the Dresden Kreuzschule . From 1946 until his Abitur in 1954 he was a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor . He studied music education and science as well as classical philology at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1961 he received his doctorate from Fritz Reuter at the Philosophical Faculty in Berlin with the dissertation The music education in ancient Greece and its relevance for our time .

After passing his state examination , he taught at the Humboldt University and the Liszt School of Music in Weimar . He then worked for 25 years at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden as a lecturer and professor of musicology. In 1993 he was appointed head of the Institute for Musicology at this Dresden University of Applied Sciences, of which he was the founder. He has been retired since 2002.

John's research focuses on the history of music in the 19th century, the history of music in Dresden , Protestant church music and the music of the Romantic era .

Hans John has published numerous musicological articles, including on Carl Maria von Weber , Robert Schumann , Franz Liszt , Karol Lipiński , Richard Wagner and the history of the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden. In addition, John published several series on Dresden's music history.

John was deputy chairman of the International Carl Maria von Weber Society, member of the Saxon Music Council and chairman of the Dresden Society of Friends of Music. He participated as a speaker at numerous international musicological congresses, including in Oxford, Sintra, Copenhagen St. Petersburg, Wroclaw, Berlin and Dresden.
