Saxon Music Council

The Saxon Music Council ( SMR ) is a Saxon registered association in the function of the State Music Council , which has set itself the task of “maintaining the musical tradition in Saxony and supporting contemporary music creation”. The association is based in Dresden and pursues exclusively charitable purposes. It is financed by subsidies from the Free State of Saxony as well as membership fees and donations.

Members of the Saxon Music Council are over 30 music associations and clubs, 15 music institutions from different musical genres as well as two honorary members and eleven individuals. The association is managed by a presidium , whose president has been Christoph Krummacher since 2007 . Aline Fiedler and Friedrich Reichel act as vice-presidents .

The Saxon Music Council is a member of the German Music Council and is also represented in the Central German Broadcasting Council (MDR).

The Saxon Music Council is the cultural and political interest group of its members and thus represents "the common interests of the institutions, associations and organizations involved in music life vis-à-vis the state government, municipal bodies and institutions as well as other public institutions".

The SMR maintains three national ensembles. The State Youth Orchestra of Saxony was founded in 1992 and offers talented young Saxon musicians the opportunity to get to know the work in a large orchestra under professional guidance. There is also the Saxony Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Landstreicher Saxony young string orchestra . In addition, the SMR networks the symphonic youth orchestras in Saxony with the platform of youth ensembles , so that a coordination u. a. concert activity is possible.

In addition to the three state ensembles, there are four other state youth ensembles of different providers. The Landesjugendblasorchester Sachsen was founded in 1997 and is run by the Sächsischer Blasmusikverband e. V. worn. The State Youth Choir of Saxony , founded in 2008 by its current musical director, Marcus Friedrich, is maintained by the Saxon Choir Association . The State Youth Plucking Orchestra of Saxony is sponsored by the State Association of Saxony of the Association of German Plucking Musicians . The SMR is also active through its competitions Jugend jazzt , Sächsische Landesbegegnung for jazz orchestra with the ŠKODA Jazz Prize , Jugend musiziert , Saxon orchestra competition and Saxon choir competition .

The SMR has been running the Saxon State Music Academy in Colditz Castle since 2010.

Johann Walter plaque

Since 2002, the Presidium of the Saxon Music Council has been awarding the Johann Walter plaque every two years to personalities who have made special contributions to the musical life of the Free State. The plaque is named after Johann Walter , who was a musical advisor and close friend of Martin Luther and played a key role in the design of the "Deutsche Messe". The plaque was designed and designed by the North Saxon sculptor Torsten Freche.
