Glen Clifford Housman (born September 3, 1971 in Rockhampton , Queensland ) is a former Australian swimmer who won the silver medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona .

Career

Beginning

Housman reached the international level of swimming after he won the 400, 800 and 1,500 meter freestyle at the 1989 Australian Swimming Championships, which is why he was nominated for the 3rd Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo . There he won the gold medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle. He began to improve and finally broke the world record for 1,500 meters freestyle at the 1990 Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide , which qualified him for the 1990 Commonwealth Games . This world record was not counted, however, because the electronic time measurement failed, although it was well before the world record time. Because of this mistake, the 1998 Commonwealth Games were awarded to Kuala Lumpur . At the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990 Housman won the gold medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle and the silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle.

1992 Summer Olympics

In 1991 Housman had to take a break due to an illness and thus watch as Kieren Perkins set the new world record in the 1,500 meter freestyle. By the time of the 1992 Summer Olympics , however, he was healthy again. He swam a very strong race over 1,500 meters freestyle, but was again beaten by Perkins and thus won the silver medal. In 1993 Housman fell ill again and made his comeback in 1994 at the Commonwealth Games . There he won the bronze medal over the 1,500 meters and the gold medal with the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay.

1996 Summer Olympics

Housman's last international appearance at the 1996 Summer Olympics was a disappointment. He did not qualify for the 1,500 meter freestyle and in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay, he only swam in the lead, while the relay finished fourth.
