The Glockenborn is a nature reserve in northern Hesse ( Kassel district ), between Wolfhagen and the Bründersen district .

description

The approximately seven hectare area was created in 2004 as an artificially created wetland biotope , which was created as a compensatory measure for the construction of a bypass road near Istha . It includes two large shallow lakes, some smaller still waters and extensive grassland .

Although the nature reserve is owned by the city ​​of Wolfhagen , the city, the Wolfhagen Forestry Office and the Kassel Regional Council work together to maintain it.

fauna and Flora

It quickly developed into a habitat for rare bird and amphibian species , with birds using the area both for migration and for the breeding season . So far, at least 40 breeding and 163 migrating bird species have been identified (as of 2018). Particular attention is paid to storks that breed there , for which an eyrie was also built.

The Glockenborn is grazed year-round by a herd of Scottish Highland cattle to help preserve the flora in the area.

Wolfhager say

The Glockenborn is part of the Wolfhager saga tradition . The legends date back to the time when the Glockenborn was not a nature reserve, but an important source of water for the city's supply.
