Gloria is a sacred choral work by Karl Jenkins , completed in 2010. It is an extensive setting of Gloria from the Latin Mass . The Latin text is divided into three movements, inserted after two movements are settings of Psalm 150 in Hebrew and an English song with a biblical background. Spoken short texts from scriptures of various religious traditions are part of the composition. Gloria was published by Boosey & Hawkes in2010and is often performed withJenkins' Te Deum .

history

Karl Jenkins composed the work in 2010 on behalf of Don Monro, who founded the choir The Really Big Chorus . The premiere was on July 11, 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall with The Really Big Chorus and the London Festival Orchestra , conducted by Brian Kay. Gloria was published by Boosey & Hawkes in 2010 .

Occupation and structure

Jenkins' Gloria is made up of a solo voice, mixed choir and a large symphony orchestra with colorful percussion . The choir is four-part SATB , but both the female and male voices are often divided into three parts. The orchestra is made up of two flutes (also piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets in Bb (second also bass clarinet), two bassoons (second also double bassoon), four horns in F, two or three trumpets in Bb, three trombones, tuba, Timpani, strong drums and strings

The text is the glory of the mass, supplemented by other sung and spoken texts. It is divided into three parts (I, II, V) and is supplemented by Psalm 150 in Hebrew (III) and an English song, the text of which is based on Bible verses (IV). Short texts from the sacred scriptures of Hinduism , Buddhism , Daoism and Islam are recited between the musical sentences . The following table shows the movements with their title, incipit , translation, tempo and key , according to the piano reduction. The beat is not specified because it changes frequently.

music

Jenkins is known for simple structures (simple structures) that are never sentimental (never sentimental) , for wide multicultural gestures (broad multicultural gestures) and a special handling of older British brass bands (a Particular take on the textures of older British band music) . One review mentions the contrast between loud brass music and silent movements in which the choir circles around a center of a few notes. The reviewer recognizes a genuine ecumenical concern of the composer in the insertion of short texts from sacred writings of various religious traditions (Hindu, Buddhist, Tao and Islam) and the use of percussion instruments that can be assigned to them (a sincere ecumenism on the composer's part ) . Movement III is reminiscent of Jenkins' well-known Adiemus , with its primeval-sounding harmonies, declamatory choral sound and pounding drums (with its primeval-sounding harmonies, declamatory choral style and pounding drummed rhythms) .

The playing time is approximately 34 minutes.

Recording

Jenkins' Gloria was recorded along with his Te Deum on CD, conducted by the composer, sung by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the London Symphony Orchestra .
