Gnade für Timothy Evans is a ZDF documentary television game from 1969 based on a true story from 1949/50.

content

The mentally retarded illiterate Timothy Evans is accused of killing his wife Beryl and their 14-month-old daughter Geraldine. Evans revokes his confession some time later and accuses his neighbor John Christie of the deeds, but after the bodies are found, Evans confesses to the deeds again and has to answer at the Old Bailey . Christie, who was called by the prosecution as the main witness, is again accused of the murders by Evans, who again declares himself innocent. Since the court no longer believes him, he is finally sentenced to death by hanging and executed two months after the end of the trial.

Others

The script was written after the actual case of Timothy Evans, whose conviction and execution led to a judicial scandal in Great Britain and called on opponents of the death penalty, as it turned out a few years later that at least the death of Evans' wife was to his account Neighbors to John Christie, who was eventually exposed as a serial killer. The film re-enacts the trial and shows the origins of the murders in flashbacks, as well as Evans' rehabilitation.

The press praised the film, especially the performance of Friedrich Georg Beckhaus, who "delivered an outstanding study of the mass murderer" .

Another film adaptation of the material followed in 1971 under the title John Christie, the strangler of London ( 10 Rillington Place ) with Richard Attenborough as John Christie and John Hurt as Timothy Evans.
