Chapel of Grace in Aldenhoven

The Gnadenkapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in the main town of Aldenhoven in the municipality of Aldenhoven in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The building is entered under number 15 in the list of architectural monuments in Aldenhoven .

history

The Chapel of Mercy dates back to an event in 1654. That year Dietrich Mülfahrt from Aldenhoven discovered a statue of Our Lady in a linden tree. Dietrich Mülfahrt then brought Johann Gatzweiler and Martin Lennartz over. They then saw the statue glow twice, which they interpreted as a divine symbol. Because of this event, Duke Philipp Wilhelm von Jülich had the Chapel of Grace built in 1659 with an octagonal floor plan. The Chapel of Grace in Altötting probably served as a model . With the construction of this chapel, the pilgrimage to the "Refuge of sinners" was officially recognized. Between 1654 and 1659 there was a saint's house in the same place. The original statue was placed on the high altar of the parish church of St. Martin after its discovery . Some time later the statue was gone, three days before the holy house was ready. The statue was quickly replaced by a very similar statue that came from the Antwerp school.

Furnishing

In the chapel there is a baroque high altar and a crucifixion group from 1650.
