Goëllo

Goëllo (also Goëlo ) is the name of a Breton rule, county or landscape. It is located in the north of the region between the Trieux and Saint-Brieuc rivers . The name is said to come from "Gouetlod" or "Gouello", which in Breton means "land of blood".

Individual Counts of Goëllo are known as early as the 9th and 10th centuries. A continuous series only results with the appointment of Henri, the third son of Count Étienne I of Tréguier and Lamballe , who in turn is a son of Odo I, Count of Penthièvre , and thus a grandson of Geoffroy I , Duke of Brittany , was; Henri's older brother was Alain de Bretagne, 1st Earl of Richmond , and his nephew was Duke Conan IV .

Henri's son Alain I. d'Avaugour († 1212) inherited the county of Penthièvre in 1206 . His son Henri II was betrothed to Alix von Thouars (1201–1221), daughter and heiress of the Breton Duke Guido von Thouars , who was married to Peter Mauclerc in 1213 by order of King Philip Augustus , who thereby became the property instead of the Avaugour family Brittany came, and the following year (1214) Henri took away the county of Penthièvre. The marriage of Alain's great-granddaughter Jeanne d'Avaugour to Guy de Penthièvre a century later restored the connection between the two lords. Jeanne's grandson Jean I , Comte de Penthièvre et de Goëllo is the last known Count of Goëllo in this line, as it is not known of his sons and grandchildren whether they also used the title Goëllo (in addition to Penthièvre and Limoges).

The fact is, however, that in 1485 , Duke François II gave (among other things) the Goëllo county to his illegitimate son François I d'Avaugour. His descendants carried the title of Count of Vertus and Goëllo until they died out in 1746.
