biography

Go Nagai

He graduated from high school in Tokyo and then worked as an assistant at Shōtarō Ishinomori , who was very successful through comics such as Cyborg 009 . Nagai, who was influenced by both Osamu Tezuka and the Gekiga artist Sanpei Shirato , published his first work as a professional draftsman in 1967. The gag manga titled Maekashi Porikichi appeared in the manga magazine Bokura , for which, among others, Leiji Matsumoto and Tatsuo Yoshida drew. Two years earlier he had already made a draft for his later manga series Kuro no Shishi , but had not published it.

Just a year later, Nagai caused a sensation when he published his manga series Harenchi Gakuen for the first time in Shōnen Jump , which was aimed primarily at elementary and middle school students. The comic takes place at a school where the goal of male students and teachers is to steal the female students' underwear. The manga, a satire on the Japanese educational system, was a thorn in the side because of many revealing scenes and a bloody end of the parent representation of Japan.

In 1970 he founded the production company Dynamic Productions , which was responsible for the production of several anime adaptations of his works and which employed fifty people in the late 1970s.

Nagai, who was assisted by up to thirteen assistants in the 1970s, also broke taboos with Devilman . It's about a boy who is supposed to fight demons that have been brought back to life, but who himself merges with a demon. The approximately 1,200-page manga, which appeared in Shōnen Magazine from 1972 to 1973 , caused a sensation with extremely brutal scenes of violence. At the same time he created the Giant Robo classic Mazinger Z and the magical girl manga Cutey Honey . Violence Jack , which was composed with interruptions from 1973 to 1978, takes place in a world destroyed by an earthquake, in which the population is divided into “strong” and “weak” people by a criminal organization. For Suna no Ō he won the Kodansha Manga Prize in 1980 .

The illustrator was still active in the 1980s and 1990s and created, for example, Devilman Lady, a sequel / remake of his Devilman manga from 1995 to 1998 for the manga magazine Morning , which is aimed at an adult, male readership ( his own ). In Devilman Lady , instead of a young person, he took a former professional athlete as the main character, who after being raped turns into a so-called "Devil-Beast" or "Devilman" and from then on is supposed to protect the world from evil beings.

effect

His works have been filmed several times, both as anime and as a feature film. Similar to Sailor Moon , Cutey Honey was implemented as a Tokusatsu television series in 2004 . Directed by Hiroyuki Nasus , a real- life version of Devilman was made in 2004 , which was filmed as an anime television series in 1972.

His hometown Wajima plans to build a museum in his honor.
