God Disease is a Finnish death-doom and death metal band from Helsinki , which was founded in 2010, disbanded in 2012 and has been active again since 2013.

history

The band was founded at the end of 2010, disbanded two years later and was re-established in February 2013 with a different line-up. This was followed by the release of a demo and two EPs , the latter were released in 2015 as a compilation Doom Howler / Abyss Cathedral on the French label South from Here Records, which was the label's first release. In 2017 the band took part in the Finnish Death Metal Maniacs festival in Pori . Two years later, the debut album Drifting Towards Inevitable Death was released on FDA Records . In April and May 2020 the group went on tour through Scandinavia together with Cryptic Brood .

style

In an interview with Necroaltar from stenchfromthegrave.wordpress.com , bassist Henry Randström stated that the songs mostly come from a riff by one of the members, mostly Matias Tuohino. The texts are inspired by wars and daily events.

David Lucido from voicesfromthedarkside.de described the music of the compilation Doom Howler / Abyss Cathedral as death metal in the style of groups like Convulse , Amorphis , Demigod and Adramelech . The songwriting of Doom Howler's songs usually consists of a first slow part with melodic guitar licks , followed by a bass break , followed by a fast part with a guitar solo , before the song ends with the first slow riff. The group also occasionally makes use of arpeggios in songs . Abyss Cathedral is the second, older half of the sound carrier. The sound is rougher and darker, otherwise the songs would hardly differ from Doom Howler in terms of their style . Jaime Pérez of the same platform summed up the style as solid death metal in his review of the album Drifting Towards Inevitable Death . He heard similarities between Grave Miasma and Incantation . Slow dragging riffs that run through the whole album are characteristic of the release, so that a sinister, dark and devastating character emerges. Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard assigned the album to Death Doom. Untypical of the genre, the band uses varied song structures. Occasionally there are melodies in the style of guitarist Gregor Mackintosh . He described the singing as very deep. Overall, he compared the album to Warnings Watching from a Distance , which is played at half speed. In an interview with Schiffmann two issues later, Laaksonen stated that the new members had been given more freedom to contribute, which meant that the album could not be pigeonholed so easily. Overall, they tried to continue where they left off with Rebirth of Horror . He described the writing process in such a way that usually one member presents an idea, which is then worked out together, whereby the end result differs greatly from the original idea through jam sessions . In terms of content, the album is about a man who does not wake up from his dreams. Melodies would play an even bigger role on future albums. He confirmed an influence from Paradise Lost , but that of My Dying Bride was even greater. Otherwise the group is influenced by Incantation, Rippikoulu and the early Amorphis. Lyrically, he draws his influence from HP Lovecraft and Victorian horror in both literature and film.
