Godolphin
The Godolphin family was one of the leading families in the county of Cornwall and was able to trace its lineage back to the time of the Norman conquest of England by William I in 1066 . The later wealth of the family came from local tin mining . Until the middle of the 18th century, the family seat was the Godolphin House near Helston in the former Kerrier District . The name Godolphin is derived from Godolghan , Cornish for white eagle , which also adorns the family's coat of arms.
The first outstanding figure was John Godolphin of Godolphin (1463-1497), the sheriff of Cornwall. His son William Godolphin (1486-1570), also appointed sheriff in Cornwall, did military service for Henry VIII and supported his campaigns with troops. Son Thomas (1520–1570) was appointed captain or governor of the Isles of Scilly in 1552 as the first of the Godolphins . His son Sir Francis Godolphin (1540-1608) then received the Isles of Scilly as a fief from the Duke of Cornwall for a limited time . His successors could each extend the fiefdom and also carried the title of Governor of Scilly . Grandson Sidney Godolphin (1610–1643) fought as a royalist on the side of King Charles I in the English Civil War , as did his brother Sir Francis Godolphin of Godolphin (1605–1667).
Sidney Godolphin (1645-1712) was probably the most important representative of the Godolphin family in the history of England. He was made Baron Godolphin (of Rialton) in 1684 and was Lord High Treasurer several times , most recently from 1702 to 1710 under Queen Anne . During this time he provided funding for the wars of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough . In 1704 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter, in 1706 he was ennobled Earl of Godolphin and was, alongside Churchill, a leading political force in this era.
Sidney's son Francis Godolphin (1678-1766), who in 1712 inherited his father's title and later to Baron Godolphin was knighted (of Helston), acquired in 1735 under the reign of King George II. The title of Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal ( Lord Privy Seal ) and was married to a daughter of Marlborough . This marriage resulted in a daughter who married Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds .
Since Francis Godolphin's two sons had died at an early age, the Duke inherited the Godolphin House family estate after the baron's death. The family name Godolphin was also carried on by the Dukes of Leeds : The Dukes' son was called Francis Godolphin Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds .
The title Baron Godolphin (of Helston) inherited the cousin, a son of Sidney's brother Henry, who was also called Francis (1707-1785). With him, the male line of the Godolphins became extinct after 24 generations because he had no male descendants.
