The golden currant ( Ribes aureum ) is a North American shrub from the genus of currants ( Ribes ) in the gooseberry family (Grossulariaceae).
description
The gold currant is a deciduous, 2–3 m high shrub. Its almost bare, slightly shiny leaves are up to 4 cm wide and have three or five lobes. In autumn they turn red. The flowers sit in 5 to 6 cm long hanging grapes and have a clover-like scent . The five short, upright petals usually turn reddish in color. They are surrounded by the wreath of golden-yellow petal-like calyx tips. From the ovaries purple-brown to black, edible berries about 8 mm in size develop with a sour, fruity aroma.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Dissemination and use
The gold currant is native to Canada, the USA and northern Mexico. It is planted as an ornamental shrub in its home country, but also in Europe because of its golden yellow flower clusters. It is completely hardy and tolerates dry soils. We seldom use it as a fruit bush. However, fruit growers occasionally use them as a base for refining them with gooseberries or currants.
Systematics
Within the genus Ribes , Ribes aureum belongs to the subgenus Coreosma (Spach) Janczewski together with the blood currant and the black currant .
Some authors treat Ribes aureum as a synonym for Ribes odoratum . The latter, however, differs among other things by larger leaves that are more hairy on the edges and on the surface.
