history

Gold mining

At the time of the discovery of the first gold vein discovered in Colorado at the Gold Run on January 15, 1859, the area was part of the Nebraska Territory . The discovery coincided with the Gregory Gulch and Clear Creek explorations , but those later discoveries were not exploited until later in the spring. On March 7, 1859, the Gold Run area became the first mining district in the region (according to various historical sources, it was named Mountain District No. 1 , Mining District No. 1 of the Nebraska Territory, and Nebraska Gold Hill Mining District ). The news of the discovery quickly spread among the gold diggers and the number of newcomers quickly increased, so that Gold Hill soon became the first permanent miners' camp in what is now Colorado. By the fall they had one at the foot of the mountain quartz - stamp mill built. The equipment for this was transported west across the Great Plains by ox cart .

In 1861, the year the Colorado Territory was formed , the surface deposits of gold in the vicinity of the city were largely depleted, so that many of the gold diggers left the city and the population temporarily declined. The construction of a smelter in Black Hawk , which could also be used to process low-grade ore, led to a certain revival.

Tellurium mining

The discovery of Tellurium in 1872 sparked a new boom, and the population again reached nearly 1,000. At the height of its development, a newspaper appeared in the town and several hotels, including the Mines Hotel, built in 1872, offered accommodation. The hotel was immortalized in a poem by Eugene Field when he was working as a newspaper man in Denver and staying at the hotel. The city suffered two major fires during its existence, but most of the historic wooden structures have been preserved.

traffic

The city has a small network of gravel roads.

Gold Hill is connected to Left Hand Canyon Road by Lick Skillet Road - the steepest county roads in the United States . Easier access to Gold Hill is via Sunshine Canyon Road from Boulder , Gold Run Road from Salina (on Four Mile Canyon Road), and Gold Hill Road from Colorado State Highway 72 south of Ward . All of these roads are covered in snow in winter, making Gold Hill inaccessible to vehicles without snow chains or four-wheel drive.
