The Golden Hinde is a mountain in the Vancouver Island Ranges on Vancouver Island , British Columbia , Canada . At 2195  m it is the highest peak on the island. The mountain is located near the geographic center of Vancouver Island. And it's also almost centrally located in 605,408 acres (2,458 km²) Strathcona Provincial Park , at the head of the Wolf River and west of Buttle Lake , approximately 25 km (16 mi) southeast of Gold River parish . The summit is very popular with people who like to climb off the main routes (backcountry climbers). The mountain was first climbed in 1913. It is made of basalt and is part of the Karmutsen formation.

The mountain is named after Sir Francis Drake's ship , which was called the Golden Hinde . The naming was initiated by a previous fur trade captain, who was reminded of Drake's ship when a sunset was reflected on the mountain (which can be seen from the west coast of the island). It also took place in memory of Drake's alleged presence on the coast of the future province of British Columbia during his circumnavigation of the world from 1577 to 1580 (Nova Albion) . The current name Golden Hinde was not officially given until 1938, when a reference to the summit was made in a fur trader's protocol. The alternative name "The Rooster's Comb" (German: "The Hahnkamm") was used by early alpinists because of the appearance of the mountain.
