The Gombasek Cave is located in the Gombasek municipality, on the western edge of the Silická planina (German Silica Plateau ) in the area of the Slovak Karst National Park near the Slavec municipality (district Gombasek), in Slovakia . It was created by the activities of the Čierny potok (literally: Schwarzbach ) and its tributaries. Of the total length of 1525 m, 535 m are accessible. The tour takes about 30 minutes.
The cave was discovered in 1951 by the cave explorers from Rožňava (German Rosenau an der Salza ). In 1955 an approximately 300 m long section was made accessible.
Typical for the cave are strange, two to three millimeters thin and up to three meters long white sintered tubes . The cave has several halls. Every hall has something special. There are colored stalactites in the spacious marble hall and nature has created cone-shaped stalagmites on the floor that are very reminiscent of a tropical anthill . The Hiroshima room was named after a stalagnate that remembers the atomic mushroom . The stalactite formations and sintered walls play there in all colors. In the hall by Ladislav Herényi , named after the discoverer of the cave, you can admire a rain of stones . It was created from the sintered tubes that grow close together.
Because of its microclimate, the cave has been used to treat upper respiratory diseases since 1968.
The Silica Gombasek cave system also includes the deepest ice cave in Central Europe, the Silická ľadnica . The cave was Gombaseker 1995 together with the caves of the Slovak Karst - Domica -Höhle and Jossauer cave for UNESCO - World Heritage declared.
