The Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa (German: Demänováer ice cave) is located on the territory of the Slovak municipality Demänovská Dolina in the Low Tatras . Along with the Demänová stalactite cave , it is one of the two caves open to the public in the Demänovská Valley. It was first mentioned in a document in 1299. The cave was created by the formerly underground course of the Demänovská River in the gray-blue limestone during the Middle Triassic .

Two different types of caves can be found in Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa

  • rounded caves ( Čierna galéria , Jazerná chodba and Medvedia chodba ) and
  • domes created by ceiling collapses and frost weathering ( Štrkový dóm , Veľký dóm , Kmeťov dóm , Bélov dóm , Halašov dóm and Dóm trosiek ).

The peculiarity of the cave is the filling of the lower part of the cave with ice. This permanent ice was created after some entrances were naturally closed. As a result, the air in the cave could no longer circulate, and the cold air remained in the lower part of the cave. The air temperature in the icy parts is a maximum of 0 ° C even during the summer. The relative humidity in the cave is between 92% and 98%, which promoted the formation of ice floors, ice columns as well as stalactites and stalagmites .

The total length of the cave is 1,750 meters, of which 650 meters are open to the public.

Access

The cave can be reached via a narrow hiking trail that leads the visitor from the parking lot in the valley to the entrance about 90 meters higher. This is located on the Bašta cliff , which is 840 meters above sea level. d. M. is located. An informative nature trail has been set up on the way to the entrance.

Flora and fauna

Seven species of bat have now been identified in the cave . In addition, many bear bones were found in the cave, which were mistaken for dragon bones in the 18th century. The old name of the cave - Dračia jaskyňa (Dragon's Cave) - goes back to this.
