Gonzalo Facio

Gonzalo Justo Facio Segreda (born March 28, 1918 in San José ; † January 24, 2018 ) was a Costa Rican politician and diplomat who was foreign minister twice.

Life

Facio was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica (Asamblea Legislativa de Costa Rica) in the 1950s and its president between 1953 and 1956. He then took on functions in the diplomatic service and was first ambassador to the United States as the successor to Fernando Fournier on August 17, 1956 and his replacement by Manuel G. Escalante Duran on June 19, 1958 .

As the successor to José Rafael Oreamuno Flores , he was again ambassador to the USA on June 11, 1962 and held this office until he was replaced by Fernando Ortuño Sobrado on June 17, 1966. At the same time he was also accredited as ambassador to Canada between 1962 and 1966 .

On May 8, 1970, Facio was appointed by President José Figueres Ferrer as the successor to Fernando Lara Bustamante as Foreign Minister of Costa Rica and also held this ministerial office under Figueres Ferrer's successor, Daniel Oduber Quirós , until his replacement by Wilburg Jiménez Castro in 1976 September 9, 1971 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique of Portugal . On July 25, 1976, he met with his counterparts Alejandro Montiel Argüello ( Nicaragua ), Adolfo Molina Orantes ( Guatemala ) and Roberto Palma Cálves ( Honduras ) at Soto Cano Air Base to talk about the effects of the so-called football war , a conflict between Honduras and El Salvador from July 14-18, 1969.

In 1977 he succeeded Jiménez Castro again in the office of Foreign Minister and held this post until the end of Oduber Quirós' term on May 8, 1978.

As the successor to Danilo Jiménez Veiga , he became ambassador to the USA for the third time on July 22, 1990 and remained there until he was replaced by Sonia Picado Sotela on August 11, 1994. His last position was between 1998 and 2001 as an ambassador to Mexico .

His marriage to Ana Franco Calzia de Facio had two daughters, Ana Catalina Facio de Marshall and the film actress and film producer , Giannina Facio de Fahrner . His son-in-law is the well-known British film director Ridley Scott .
