Good Mourning, America is a song by the American progressive post-hardcore band letlive ., Which was released on April 6, 2016 as the first single for the fourth studio album If I'm the Devil… . In terms of content, the play deals with police violence against African Americans and racism .

background

In an article in the British newspaper The Independent , Good Mourning, America was inspired by the murder of a white policeman against the African American teenager Michael Brown and the riots that followed in Ferguson , Missouri in August 2014.

According to a study by the University of Louisville and the University of South Carolina , of the 93 firearms used by the police in 2015, forty percent of the victims were African American . The total population of the Afro-American minority is just under 18 percent of the total population.

content

The song deals with the subject of police violence against African American residents and with racism in the United States . Singer Jason Butler also deals with a personally made experience; A few years ago, for example, he himself was imprisoned for a situation in which he believed he had not committed anything. He had tried a friend to accompany a Hispanic home from a party when a police officer tried to stop them. Butler has been taken into custody for alleged violence against police officers . Although it was clarified that same evening that the police officer on duty had acted wrongly, a note remained in Butler's file, which makes traveling and other activities difficult for him.

The song starts with a scene in which people communicate with each other until the police enter the scene and fire two shots into the supposed crowd. Then a choir with female voices starts with a protest song before singer Jason Butler seamlessly continues with his singing. Musically, the song begins with simple rhythms and turns into a "smashy post-hardcore " as the piece continues .

In the first lines of the song it says:

"We ain't so different now are we?
Said the cop to the killer inside of me
I've heard your story, boy, and that shit gets old /
We've got the right to take your life, so do just what you're told. "
