The Google Pixel 3 (XL) is a smartphone from the Pixel product line from Google . It is the third model in the range and was launched in New York on October 9, 2018.
Both models are available in Just Black , Clearly White and Not Pink .
Technical specifications
The Pixel 3 has an OLED screen made by LG with a size of 5.5 inches and 2160 × 1080 pixels ( pixel density 443ppi). The screen of the Pixel 3 XL produced by Samsung is 6.3 inches and 2960 × 1440 pixels (523 ppi). The smaller model has a format of 18: 9, the larger one of 18.5: 9 due to the “notch”. Both devices use Gorilla Glass 5 and offer HDR playback according to UHDA certification.
Both models have identical 12.2 MP rear cameras and an 8 MP dual front camera for wide-angle and telephoto. Optical and electronic image stabilization as well as flicker sensors are available in both models. The rear camera can record videos at 1080p at up to 120 fps, at 4K up to 30 fps.
The devices are based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip and also use a Titan-M-Chip, a downsized version of Google's Titanium chips that are used in servers to securely store sensitive data.
You can buy both models with 64 or 128 GB of memory, there is no slot for memory cards, as with all Pixel and Nexus devices from Google.
Identical stereo front speakers are installed in both models, and there is also noise suppression.
The battery of the Pixel 3 has a capacity of 2915 mAh, that of the Pixel 3 XL 3430 mAh. Both models can be charged quickly with the 18 W cable provided. In addition, both smartphones can be charged wirelessly via the Pixel Stand fast charging station. According to reports, charging on stations from other manufacturers is only supposed to work at a reduced rate, but this has not been confirmed.
There is a fingerprint sensor on the back of both models.
camera
The camera should (as of 2018) be one of the best smartphone cameras. The main reason for this is the software, which significantly improves many images in post-processing. The camera also offers the following special functions:
Top shot
Here, many pictures are taken in quick succession and the best is selected automatically or manually, which is useful for moving objects, for example.
Night vision
Here, too, several pictures are taken in quick succession in order to achieve good results in low light. In several tests, including that of the computer picture (issue 1/2019), the camera achieved the best results compared to smartphones such as the Huawei Mate 20 Pro .
Playground
In the playground mode, virtual figures or objects can be inserted into the real environment. In addition to athletes, animals or vehicles, you can also choose from well-known characters from films and comics.

Google guarantees new Android versions for two years as well as security fixes for another year.
Until January 31, 2022, you can save all photos and videos made with the Pixel 3 (XL) free of charge and in original quality in Google's cloud.
If you bought a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL by December 31, 2018, you will receive free YouTube Music Premium for six months.
The Active Edge function makes it possible to open the Google Assistant by pressing the left and right together.
When turning the smartphone over to the screen, you can activate the "Pssst" mode, in which you no longer receive any notifications.
In the USA you can use the "Screen Call" to forward spam calls to a kind of answering machine. The latter can ask the caller further questions about the call. The function is not yet possible in Germany.
price
At launch, the Pixel 3 started with 64 GB at € 845 and the Pixel 3 XL at € 945. An expansion of the memory to 128 GB costs € 100 more for both models.
Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL
Two versions of the Pixel 3 for the mid-range segment have been available since May 2019. These are the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL.
Compared to the Pixel 3, there are some restrictions due to the lower price (approx. € 300 - € 400, depending on the provider):
- Wireless charging is not possible
- Not waterproof
- No second wide-angle front camera available
- The less powerful Snapdragon 670 chipset is installed.
