The Gorce National Park ( Polish Gorczański Park Narodowy ) is located in the southern part of Poland , in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . The national park includes the central and northeastern part of the Gorce Mountains , which in turn is part of the western Beskids .

General

Although first attempts to protect this area go back to 1927, the national park was only founded in 1981 with a size of 23.90 km². In the course of time, the area was expanded again and again until it reached the current extent of 70.30 km². In addition, a protection zone of 166.47 km² was established around the park. The landscape is dominated by gentle, dome-shaped peaks. The highest mountain in the Gorce Mountains is the Turbacz , which is just outside the park. It is the starting point for several long ridges. The Gorce massif is deeply cut by river valleys. Water bodies are more in the background of the national park (0.18 km² of the total area), there are no lakes or larger rivers. The dominant sandstone cliffs on the northern slopes are typical of the Gorce Mountains. Given its location, the national park has many spectacular viewpoints from which the neighboring mountain ranges can be clearly seen. The views of the Tatras , Babia Góra and the Pienines are particularly impressive .

A special feature of the national park is the flora that occurs here. There are 17 alpine and 24 subalpine species that can be found among others. a. takes place in the clearings. About 95% of the park area is covered with forests. A significant part of it is more than 100 years old. The high forest clearings were created primarily through human action. Due to the reduction in grazing in the mountains, there has been an enormous increase in bush and tree plants in the clearings. As a result, many original plant communities have been severely pushed back. Attempts are currently being made to protect the most valuable clearings separately.

The fauna of the Gorce Mountains shows the typical range of a Beskid Mountains. Mountain animals are numerous. Including over 46 species of mammals. In addition to the lynx , wolf and brown bear , large numbers of deer , roe deer and wild boar also live here . The bird life is abundant, u. a. come buzzard , honey buzzard , Eurasian Hobby , hawks , owls , woodpeckers before and some grouse birds. A rarity of the national park are the representatives of the dormouse , u. a. the dormouse and the dormouse . In the national park there are also amphibians such as the fire salamander , which occurs here in the nominate form and can also be found in the park's logo.
