Gordon H. Smith (born May 25, 1952 in Pendleton , Oregon ) is an American politician and businessman .

Life

After finishing school in Maryland, Smith went on missionary work for his Mormon Church in New Zealand for two years . After that, Smith studied at the Brigham Young University and the Southwestern University School of Law Law . After graduating, Smith worked as a lawyer in the US states of New Mexico and Arizona . Smith returned to Oregon in the 1980s and became chairman of the family-owned Smith Frozen Foods in Weston, Oregon .

Smith is a member of the Republican Party . From January 3, 1997 to January 3, 2009, Smith was a Senator in the United States Senate for the state of Oregon . He is succeeded as Senator by Democrat Jeff Merkley , who beat him in the 2008 election .

Smith is married to Sharon Smith and adopted three children with her in the 1980s. In September 2003, his son Garett committed suicide. In memory of his son, Smith wrote Remembering Garrett, One Family's Battle with a Child's Depression . Smith lives with his family in Pendleton, Oregon and Bethesda , Maryland . Smith is a member of the Mormons .
