history

In 1851, Dr. William C. McKay started a shop near the mouth of the McKay Creek. In 1865 a post office was set up that still had Marshall as the place name. Marshall was the name of a businessman who was a local merchant. The city was officially founded in 1880.

In 1900 Pendleton had 4,406 residents and was the fourth largest city in Oregon. Like many places in Eastern Oregon, Pendleton had a bustling Chinatown in the 1880s and 1920s. Since the Chinese felt themselves exposed to constant reprisals and no longer dared to go out into the streets after dark, an underground network of tunnels was created where they could go about their business undisturbed. There were u. a. Pharmacies, saloons, brothels and a butcher's shop. The long unused tunnels were only discovered in the 1980s, when more and more roads sagged. The tunnels can be visited today.

The city was named in 1868 after George H. Pendleton , a candidate for Vice President. Pendleton Woolen Mills, opened in 1893, is a world-renowned manufacturer of Indian blankets and embroidered men's ponchos .

The annual Pendleton Roundup - Rodeo has been held here as part of the PRCA competition since 1910 .

Another special feature is the red light district , which in 1947 had 20 brothels in the center.

Road access is provided by Interstate 84 (west) , which connects Pendleton to Portland to the west and Boise to the east.

The Umatilla River flows through Pendleton.
