Gordon Slynn, Baron Slynn of Hadley GBE , PC , QC ( February 17, 1930 - April 7, 2009 ) was a British judge.

life and career

Slynn was born on February 17, 1930 to John and Edith Slynn. He attended Sandbach School , Goldsmiths, University of London and Trinity College (Cambridge) . In 1956 he was inducted into the Gray's Inn Bar Association and became a senior member ( Bencher ) in 1970 and treasurer in 1988.

Slynn served as a lawyer in the Department of Labor between 1967 and 1968, and as First Junior Treasury Counsel (Common Law) from 1968 to 1974. He became Crown Attorney in 1974 . As a result, the newly created post of judicial officer in the Treasury (Ministry of Finance) was transferred to him. He held this office until 1976. In 1978 he became President of the Employment Appeal Tribunal . From 1981 to 1988 he worked as an advocate general at the European Court of Justice . From 1988 to 1992 he was a judge at the European Court of Justice . Slynn was Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1992 to 2002 . On March 11, 1992, he also became a life peer as Baron Slynn of Hadley , of Eggington in the County of Bedfordshire . In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER . Between 1992 and 2005 he took part in discussions several times. As Lord of Appeal, he resigned for health reasons in 2002, three years earlier than necessary. Slynn died of cancer on April 7, 2009, at the age of 79.

Honors

In 1976 he became a Knight Bachelor . He was Chief Steward of Hereford from 1978 to 2008 and was awarded the Freedom of the City award in 1996. In 1992 he served as President of the Bentham Club and in 1993 as President of the Holdsworth Club . He made a visit from 1995 to 2002 at Mansfield College, University of Oxford and from 1995 to 2000 at the University of Essex . Slynn was inducted into the Order of Saint John in 1998. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2009. Slynn has also served as Honorary President of the Durham Mooting Society and Honorary Fellow of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society at the University of Virginia .

He was married to Odile Marie Henriette Boutin since 1962.
