Gorgon painter
The Gorgon painter was one of the first vase painters of the Attic black-figure style. He was between 600 and 580 BC. Active.
The Gorgon Painter is considered to be a very productive successor to the Nessos Painter , whose “immense” style he steered in an orderly manner. He got his emergency name after his name vase , a dinosaur in the Louvre E 874, on which Perseus is shown fleeing from the Gorgons . He was the first representative of the animal frieze style in Athens and drew animal friezes based on the Corinthian pattern. In addition, he arranged his demonic animal world in symmetrical patterns. Lions with box-shaped snouts, red mane of flame and hatched mane are characteristic of his pictures. He rarely depicted people, they are always accompanied by animals or animal friezes. There is only a complex pattern of action with his name vase. However, this representation is the first of its kind for an Attic vase painter. Overall, the Gorgon painter is still very dependent on Corinthian vase painting. His portrayals of people are considered stiff and mannered. In addition to Dimoi, he painted an early form of Lekythen , which in their shape still resembled Corinthian aryballs , Olpen Teller, Amphoriskoi , Kothone and Oinochoen . The Gorgon painter established a tradition in his workshop that can be traced for a long time, especially at Olpen . Imitations of his works are known from Boeotia .
