Gornja Dubica is a village community in northeastern Bosnia-Herzegovina , which is almost exclusively inhabited by Bosnian Croats . It belongs to the Odžak municipality . Neighboring towns are Donja Dubica and Novo Selo .

history

Gornja Dubica experienced two major waves of emigration, which caused changes in the age structure. The first wave of emigration took place in the early 1970s, when the younger generation in particular emigrated to Germany, Austria and Switzerland for economic reasons.

The second wave of emigration followed when Gornja Dubica reached the Bosnian War on April 21, 1992 . Most of the villagers fled to Croatia and usually settled there. Through the Treaty of Dayton, Gornja Dubica came to the new entity Federation Bosnia and Herzegovina (Federacija Bosne i Hercegovine) in 1995 . At that time the village was completely destroyed and uninhabitable. Most of the houses in Gornja Dubica have now been rebuilt, but most of the houses are empty. The village is almost exclusively inhabited by pensioners.

The vast majority of the residents of Gornja Dubica are Roman Catholic . At the beginning of 2011 there were 1,482 parishioners. The parish fair plays an important social role in Gornja Dubica. The patron saint of the village is Saint Joseph and is celebrated annually on March 19th. Saint Joseph is therefore also the namesake of Roman Catholic parishes. The parish church was completely destroyed in the 1992 war. In 1996 the construction of a new church started. The construction took several years and was mainly financed by donations from foreign Croats from the village.
