The Gorrenberg was an artificial elevation, probably a prehistoric burial mound near Gerbitz , a district of Nienburg (Saale) in the Salzland district ( Saxony-Anhalt ).

location

The hill was in a field south of Gerbitz. The lime ponds of Latdorf are located immediately southwest of its former location. There were originally numerous other prehistoric grave monuments in the vicinity, not all of which have survived today. A few hundred meters to the south-east was the presumed burial mound Leerberg , to the northwest is the large stone grave of Bierberg , to the west the large stone grave of Heringsberg , south of the Galgenberg , the Trappenberg , the large stone grave of Steinerne Hütte and the burial mound Spitzes Hoch, and to the southwest the burial mounds of Pohlsberg and Pfingstberg .

History of the hill

Maps from the 17th century show that the Swedish general Lennart Torstensson set up an army camp near Bernburg in 1644 during the Thirty Years War , which enclosed Latdorf and the Heringsberg, the Bierberg, (possibly) the Gorrenberg, the Leerberg, the Trappenberg, the Pohlsberg and used the Pfingstberg as viewpoints for the bastions of the fortification.

In 1833 Heinrich Lindner named next to the Trappenberg, the Galgenberg and the Legerberg (Leerberg) another Bruchberg as a preserved monument. The latter is likely to be the Gorrenberg. This was probably not completely removed until the 20th century. It is still recorded on a measuring table from 1938. No prehistoric finds are known.
