The Gospelkombinat Nordost is a German gospel choir that was founded in Greifswald in 2005 and has made its mark through a series of choral tours throughout Europe, musical productions and CD recordings.

history

The ensemble of the Greifswald University Choir with originally seven members was founded as the Faculty Choir of the Theological Faculty of the University of Greifswald , but then grew quickly and rehearsed first in the Jakobikirche and later in the Mariengemeinde . The ensemble has been part of the Evangelical Johanneskirche parish in Greifswald since 2016 and performs in changing cast. In 2019 the ensemble consisted of 35 singers.

founding

After the rehearsal phases for the gospel mass of the Greifswald University Choir in the summer semester of 2004, some of the members of the choir wanted to continue singing gospel . This resulted in an initially nameless vocal ensemble at the theological faculty of Greifswald University. The rehearsal work was already very popular in the first few months, so that the seminar room of the faculty was no longer sufficient and the rehearsals of the newly created gospel choir had to be moved to the Jakobikirche .

The name

Based on the term typical for a company in the GDR , the name came about by chance in 2010 on the way to the first concert on Rügen , as the musical director likes to report at concerts:

“On the drive to our very first real concert on Rügen, we were somehow embarrassed that we didn't even have a real name. So we thought back and forth - and drove past a bright red sign at the entrance to Rambin, which announced a fish combine. It took a while before we dared actually use this name. To this day, it sometimes causes irritation and head shaking - or even a heightened interest in what kind of strange troop that might be. In the meantime we think: This name suits us well - a bit weird, and especially because of the various currents that come together. Our combine 'produces' (namely music) and has already put a lot of things together. Above all, we are pleased with a wink that it is possible to make lively Christian music against the background of the GDR history that has shaped this country. "

successes

Projects

In 2010 the ANKOR choir of the Jerusalem Conservatory traveled to Germany at the invitation of the ensemble and first came into contact with the gospel choir tradition . In addition to a joint benefit concert in Greifswald, the Gospel Combine was committed to a Jewish-Arab holiday camp and Judeo-Christian dialogue.

As a musical crossover project , the ensemble and the computer scientist Roland C. Kahler from Texas developed a gospel cantata on the biblical narrative of the transfiguration of Jesus . For this, the historical form of the cantata was adapted for the gospel tradition. Members of the choir contributed to the texts, which were set to music by the musical director Nicole Chibici-Revneanu.

On the occasion of the Reformation anniversary in 2017 , the choir set German texts from the 16th century to music in gospel hymns . For this purpose, a Martin Luther song was musically combined with a psalm and thus alluded to the history of the East German Reformation and the church in the GDR . This resulted in a varied concert program and a CD recording .

Members of the ensemble regularly organize choir and gospel projects in the region, such as the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Gospel Night , invite other choirs to joint concerts or take part in musical productions such as the Pomeranian Engelspierken or other regional cultural events.

Style and performance

Stylistically, the repertoire combines modern gospel with pop , jazz , rhythm and blues and old choral music . The choir mainly sings piano-accompanied arrangements and compositions by the musical director Nicole Chibici-Revneanu. Characteristic for performances by the Gospel Combine are expansive productions , moderation by ensemble members who lead through the program and give spiritual impulses as well as solo performances by all choristers.
