Lalji Tandon ( Hindi : लालजी टंडन; born April 12, 1935 in Chowk Village, Lucknow District , United Provinces, British India ; † July 21, 2020 in Lucknow , Uttar Pradesh ) was an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Member of Lok Sabha between 2009 and 2014 and governor of Bihar from 2018 to 2019 . He was most recently governor of Madhya Pradesh from 2019 until his death .

Life

Lalji Tandon, son of Shivnarayan Tandan and Annpurna Devi, worked as a social worker after attending school. In 1978 he became a member of the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) , the upper house of the state of Uttar Pradesh , and was a member of it until 1984. He was again a member of the Legislative Council of Uttar Pradesh between 1990 and 1996 and served as Minister of State for Energy in the government of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh between 1991 and 1992 . After leaving the Vidhan Parishad , he was a member of the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) , the lower house of Uttar Pradesh, for three consecutive terms between 1996 and 2009 .

During this time, Tandon was Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing in 1997 and then Minister of State for Urban Development and Water Supply in the governments of the state of Uttar Pradesh from 1997 to 1999. In addition, between 1997 and 2002 he acted as leader of the majority faction of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Vidhan Sabha and thus as Leader of the House . At the same time he was Minister of State for Urban Development and Urban Poverty Reduction in the governments of the federal state of Uttar Pradesh between 1999 and 2000 and again from 2000 to 2002. Thereupon he served in Uttar Pradesh between 2002 and 2003 in the government of Chief Minister Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party as Minister of State for Housing, Finance, Urban Development and Tourism. He was most recently from 2003 to 2007 opposition leader (Leader of the Opposition) in the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh.

In the parliamentary elections in India in 2009 , Tandon was elected for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a member of the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament (Bhāratīya Saṃsad) , and represented the Lok Sabha constituency of Lucknow until the 2014 general election . During his parliamentary membership he was a member of the Treasury Committee from August 6, 2009 to 2014 and a member of the Railway Committee from August 31, 2009 to 2014.

On August 23, 2018, Lalji Tandon was appointed governor of Bihar to succeed Satya Pal Malik and held that office until July 27, 2019, when Phagu Chauhan succeeded him. He then took over the post of Governor of Madhya Pradesh from Anandiben Patel on July 29, 2019 . He held this office until his death on July 21, 2020. Anandiben Patel then became acting governor.

His marriage to Krishna Tandon on February 26, 1958 resulted in three sons.
