Gothart Magaard

Gothart Magaard (born November 1, 1955 in Flensburg ) is a German Protestant - Lutheran theologian , since May 1, 2014 bishop in the Schleswig and Holstein district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany (Northern Church). His place of preaching is the St. Petri Cathedral in Schleswig .

Life

Magaard was born in 1955 as the son of pastor Hans Magaard and theologian Hildegund Magaard, b. Zenk, born in Flensburg. From 1962 to 1965 he attended primary school in Munkbrarup , from 1965 to 1968 the old grammar school in Flensburg and from 1968 to 1975 the cathedral school in Schleswig . He did his community service from 1975 to 1977 with the Action Reconciliation Peace Service in the Communauté de Taizé / France. He studied theology at the Church University and at the Free University (West) Berlin and at the University of Hamburg . He completed his vicariate from 1984 to 1986 in the parish of Lübeck-Kücknitz . After the second examination, he was in Hamburg in 1986 St. Michaelis Church ordained .

Magaard then worked as a pastor in Hamburg-Jenfeld , and from 1989 as a theological consultant in the North Elbe Church Office (Kiel). Between 1991 and 2005 he worked at the Preetz Preacher and Study Seminar , initially as a study director, later as director. From 2005 Magaard headed the personnel department of the North Elbe Church Office. He worked in the reform process of the North Elbian Church and in the merger negotiations of the North Church.

In October 2009, on behalf of the Synod, the church leadership entrusted him with the episcopal tasks in the Schleswig and Holstein district , as the elected Bishop Gerhard Ulrich, as chairman of the church leadership, had assumed central tasks in the merger process into the Northern Church . Magaard took on the episcopal duties in the district since October 1st, 2009, first as the bishop's plenipotentiary and then from the summer of 2013 as the bishop's representative. Since May 1, 2014 he has been the elected bishop.

Magaard is married and has four grown children. His brother Friedemann Magaard temporarily headed the Christian Jensen College in Breklum and has been pastor at the Marienkirche in Husum since March 1, 2018 .

tasks

Magaard advises the church districts, convents and parishes in the district . He represents the regional church at ecclesiastical and social events and maintains dialogue with the various religious, political and social groups. Magaard works as a member of the church leadership of the northern church and as a member of the bishops' council in questions and decisions relating to the whole church.

The Schleswig and Holstein district includes the eight church districts Altholstein, Dithmarschen, North Friesland, Ostholstein, Plön-Segeberg, Schleswig-Flensburg, Rantzau-Münsterdorf and Rendsburg-Eckernförde as well as the North Schleswig community in Denmark with a total of 365 parishes .

Other functions and offices

Since February 2010, Magaard has been responsible for the state church commissioner for the state of Schleswig-Holstein . He is u. a. Patron for the Voluntary Ecological Year in Schleswig-Holstein. He was chairman of the steering group of the North Church for the Reformation anniversary in 2017 .
